Foster Care Training – A state by state guide.

Below is a brief description of what each state requires for foster care training:

Alabama – Foster care training of 30 hours.  Alabama does have different types of foster care that may require different types of training.  For more information call (334) 242-1310

Alaska – The state website does not mention any foster care training requirements at all.  For more information please e-mail OCS@alaska.gov

Arizona – Foster care pre-service training of 30 hours.  For more information please call 1-877-KIDS-NEEDU.

Arkansas – Foster care pre-service training is required but hours are not specified.  For more information please call (501) 682-8570.

California - No information provided, for info please e-mail fosteryouthhelp@dss.ca.gov.

Colorado- Foster parents are required to attend training classes as part of the certification process.  For more information call Mary Griffin at 303-866-3546.

Connecticut – Foster care training of 27 hours.  For more information call 1-888-543-4376.

Delaware- Foster care training of nine weeks is required.  For more information call 1-800-464-4357.

District of Columbia-Foster care training twice weekly for five weeks is required.  For more information please call (202) 671-LOVE.

Florida-Foster care training is not mentioned on their website.  If you have any questions, please call 1-800-981-KIDS and talk with a licensing counselor.

Georgia-A 12 week foster care training course is required.   For more information please call 877.210.KIDS (5437).

Hawaii- applicants are required to attend an 18-hour pre-service training, called PRIDE.  Partners in Development Foundation-Hui Ho'omalu (PIDF) is contracted by the Department to provide the training.  For more information please e-mail hui@pidfoundation.net.

Idaho- Foster care training by PRIDE is required.  For more information please contact 1-800-926-2588 or email careline@idhw.state.id.us

Illinois-Foster care training is required but not specified online.  For more information please call 1-800-624-KIDS.

Indiana-Foster care training is determined by the county.  For more information please call 317-524-2600.

Iowa-Foster care pre-service training of 30 hours is required.  For more information call 800-243-0756.

Kansas-Foster care training is required but hours are not specified online.  Please contact (785) 841-4138.
